A Brooklyn judge has rebuked the NYPD for conducting “Operation Lucky Bag” stings in which passersby are tempted by unattended riches:

A Brooklyn judge says the NYPD should pack it in when it comes to a controversial sting that tempts passers-by with a seemingly unattended bag full of valuables.

Criminal Court Judge Matthew Sciarrino dismissed petit larceny and possession of stolen property charges against a Brooklyn man busted in the sting, which was first reported by The Post.

“The police should concentrate their noble efforts on behalf of the city on countering real crimes committed every day,” Sciarrino wrote. “They do not need to manipulate a situation where temptation may overcome even people who would normally never think of committing a crime.”

The 21-year-old was busted on Feb. 15 at the Jay Street subway station after he picked up a bag containing an X-Box, a cellphone and cash. Prosecutors said a fellow commuter urged him to turn in the bag, but he responded, “I’ll take my chances.”
