“It’s just wrong,” said Manhattan Councilwoman Rosie Mendez, who charges the exotic circus animals are abused and belong in the wild, not in captivity for entertainment.
Mendez’s bill — should it become law — would dramatically alter Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s annual performances at Madison Square Garden.
“I’m not sure people are aware of how badly the animals are treated,” Mendez said.
“It’s a long time coming,” said Sherry Ramsey, New York state director of the Humane Society. “It’s time to make ourselves more civilized in the way we entertain ourselves.”
