While announcing the first of a series of bond deals to finance his five-year, $4.7 billion school construction plan, the mayor said his efforts to give kids more space is “being exacerbated by the fact that our schools are getting better and parents are more inclined to stay in the city as their children get older.”

“In the past, a lot of [parents] thought that our public schools weren’t of sufficient quality for them to maintain residence here. More and more, today, they believe that the 80,000 teachers that work in our school system are doing a spectacular job and that they want to send their children to the public school system and they want to stay here.”
