Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Don’t Pursue
In the name of positive interstate relations, it seems to have become a matter of don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue:
Environmental officials in New York and New Jersey said yesterday they have given up hope of finding the source of a mysterious odor that swept across parts of the city last week.
Jersey officials checked out more than 140 industrial facilities and came up empty.
New York City officials analyzed air samples taken when the vapors lingered over Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island on Jan. 8. They, too, reached no conclusion.
Unless the bad smell returns, the city is finished with the matter, an official said.
