Another Reason Why It’s Not A Good Idea To Live With Your Mother Into Your 50s

Then again, you do always want to raise your children to be independently minded productive members of society:

[A man], 54, sued his mom [. . .] now 86, for leg injuries he suffered four years ago when he fell on a staircase leading to an apartment he rented from her.

[The man], who fractured his femur and was laid up for seven months, has settled his $5 million lawsuit with his mother’s insurance carrier for $400,000, said his lawyer [. . .].

While some folks are reluctant to sue a relative or friend over an accident for fear of straining or even severing their relationship, [the lawyer] says there’s no reason to flinch from litigation, particularly if the party alleged to be at fault has insurance.

Tautology Of The Day

The Bryant Park Corporation’s director of operations explains what they do with the coins they fish out of the fountain there:

“The coins pay for the collection of the coins,” he said. “You get your happy feeling and we take nothing off the top.”

“C” Something, Say Something

Between grade inflation, improbable scores, restaurateurs ignoring dumb rules and now other restaurateurs apparently can have a letter grade changed without the fuss of a hearing. Perhaps the restaurant letter grade system is less useful than this administration’s Simplicists believed:

One of the city’s highest-end restaurants won’t have to post a dreaded “grade pending” sign next to its three-star Michelin rating thanks to a well-placed call to the Health Department.

Officials downgraded violations issued on Jan. 31 to Per Se, a big-bucks temple of the culinary arts in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, so that it could post the top sanitary grade of “A” even though an inspector slapped the eatery with a “B.”

Milton Glaser’s Secret Police Have Come For Those Knockoff Ts

If you are uncomfortable with the NYPD spying on any one or thing just because he or it is vaguely connected to Islam, then maybe you’ll feel better that they have also become rather efficient trademark enforcers:

[. . . A] police officer for Manhattan South’s Peddler Task Force, stressed that the onus is on the merchants to make sure they’re receiving the merchandise from legitimate distributors.

“These particular arrests are based on observation . . . and by that time, the crime has been committed already,” said [the officer]. “Unfortunately, the fact that you don’t know an item you’re selling is counterfeit is not a defense or excuse to the Police Department.”

In order for the cops to enforce the law, Rovio, Gucci, and all the other brand-named companies are responsible for training them on the unique traits of their merchandise.

“We don’t make arrests on trademark counterfeit unless we have a complaint [from the brand-named company],” explained [a lieutenant].

And like what happens so often, what starts out as an inspired idea quickly devolves into a cheap way to score some easy collars:

[One vendor] said it’s unfair that vendors are suddenly being arrested for selling items they’ve been selling for years, such as the “I love New York” t-shirt and magnets. “I think the arrests are so simple for the policemen — it’s like a game [for them],” he said.

The Problem With Hipster

Your neighborhood is either too cool, or not cool enough, for bikeshare kiosks:

The city’s new bike share program is set to offer thousands of wheels at 600 kiosks across Brooklyn and Manhattan beginning this summer — but the proposed plan leaves a significant chunk of Greenpoint without stations, according to a Department of Transportation draft.

Locals say there is a significant need for the program in the neighborhood, but the DOT’s recent map has not proposed bike kiosks east of [McGuinness] Boulevard, including McGolrick Park and other residential areas of Greenpoint.
