It's hard not to love Queens's own 5 Boroughs Ice Cream. They name their flavors for NYC neighborhoods, they are committed to locally sourcing their ingredients, and they even give back to the community. Oh, and their ice cream is pretty good, too.
We sought out their retro-cute packaging at a Sunnyside bodega, alas, one that doesn't take its freezer temperatures all that seriously. Our pint of Astoria-inspired, baklava-flecked Bakla-Wha?! was tainted by a hint of freezerburn.
Slight iciness was not enough to put us off the rich, cinnamon-spiced ice cream, thick with honeyed chunks of pastry. It was a great dessert on its own, and would probably make for a decadently kickass garnish for a plate of actual baklava.
It won't be long before we go on a search for their Cha Cha Chocolate . . .
